you should download GOM player. >>> www.gomlab.com

The player will automatically search and suggest the required codec to play any files. I've been using it for quite some time and now preferred to used this player over others on the ease of use factor. I love the subtitle and audio sync option, it's really help a lot!.

the other option, you can google "mkv codec", download and install it, if you still want to use your current player.
