Epic, dramatic, ambitious ... Risen endorses all of these adjectives, and gives us one of the inevitable events for the amateur's role in the future. The creators of Gothic return to the attack with more RPGs, but this time more than ever are interested in networks of actions and consequences. A journey, an adventure, an epic.
Piranha Bytes has abandoned the Gothic series, but has neglected the role set in fantasy worlds and pseudomedieval, since with Risen eager to carry out the most lavish, huge and profound of his adventures. With a narrative that seems to drink from the classic tales, and a single player campaign that includes the best of the work of the study; Risen is postulated as one of the names to follow in this year 2009.
Forbidden Island
Risen in the land of a great cataclysm occurs, causing the magic of the gods to weaken and that the surface of the earth will become inhospitable, full of volcanoes and earthquakes that afflict the region. From the depths of ancient temples and forgotten emerge that serve as shelter for creatures of nightmare.
The languages most superstitious attributed these events to the appearance of an evil demon, and human Inquisitor arrives at the island where the game is developed to impose a general curfew. Citizens should stay in the port city for their own safety, and who violate the ordinance and leave the safety of the fortress walls surrounding the town will be arrested and jailed.
What at first seems an emergency, quickly turns to land at a place called the Forbidden Island, where those who violate the rules are locked and where the rest were working under the orders of The Inquisitor's almost like slaves in their excavations.
Thus the role of a hero who embarks on a journey to this place across the sea, and after a devastating storm looks like your ship is destroyed and his lifeless body lying on the sand of the island. As the protagonist did not take long to discover that there are two opposing sides for control over this huge land mass, two factions who see a new enemy creature that will not help nothing to their ancient conflict.
As newcomers to this world, the main premise of Piranha Bytes Risen in the universe is to provide the player with the greatest possible freedom. Translates into something like a video game with a mammoth production, so much so that their creators have teamed up with Wizardbox for almost three years, which means that even overlapped with work on Gothic 3.
Its creators say the strength of the game is based on exploration, but far from being an exploration focused solely on the ground and the terrain, so is the nature of the characters who inhabit it. "The temperament and culture of the inhabitants weave a gripping storyline that hooks from the first game," he says from Piranha Bytes.
What we do in the world of Risen, therefore, will have a direct impact on the world around us. So much so that if we save a character, for example women, randomly found anywhere, you might want to join our group and help in combat. If, on the contrary, abandoned to their fate or may executed game dwellers know and punish us for it. If during the rest of the trip did not mention anyone in this character of Sarah, one of the survivors of the sinking in the early game, your body will appear devoured by wolves. When speaking with Neil, one of the bandits of the island, it will rescue and Sarah appear in their camp later. When speaking with an apprentice on a farm about Sara as being more secure, rather than in the camp of bandits, she will appear in that farm.
This is just one of the first examples we will discover in Risen, although there are hundreds of them every step we take. Every decision we make will affect the world around us, and will affect the balance between factions complicated prevailing around us. In Piranha Bytes are so confident in regard to this system, which they consider superior to other games like Fable, KOTOR or Mass Effect. To find out if this is true now and at launch will offer new developments and Printing, which is that though much time for the sale-yet undetermined, Risen seems incredibly promising.
